I am delighted
to announce a new training program, which enables qualified
students to obtain a group psychotherapy doctorate through online
study, supplemented by face to face meetings.
Haim Weinberg, Ph.D.
About the Program
This is a unique program for therapists around the world that is
offered by the Professional School of Psychology The program is suitable for mental health
practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, art
therapists, psychodramatists, and anyone dealing with group
therapy. Upon graduating, the student is eligible for a PsyD
degree (Doctorate in Psychology) approved by the State of
California, USA. Whether you are already leading groups or
interested in developing expertise in this fascinating field –
this is the program for you.
How the Program is Run and Tailored to Your Needs
This distinctive tutorial-based program combines online distance
learning with face-to-face periodic meetings. It will be
individually tailored for you according to your level of
experience and special needs, as well as your location and
available time. For example, if you have led groups but feel that
you lack some theoretical background, you will focus more on
theories in group therapy. As the senior tutor of this program, I
will be in close contact with you, if you enrol, discussing your
progress and suggesting improvements. The frequent interactions
between us include phone talks, email exchange and face-to-face
meetings. In addition there will be group meetings and group
interactions, either through Internet forums or quarterly face to
face. These group meetings will take place either at my location
(currently Sacramento, CA, USA) or near the student's location (in
rotation). Group meetings and interactions with other students
will be part of the learning process.
The group psychotherapy program builds on four components: theory,
skills, experience and supervision. Being a Psy.D. program (in
contrast to PhD) means developing practical expertise in addition
to learning abstract theories. As part of the program you will
participate in a group, co-lead a group with a senior therapist,
and be encouraged to participate and present in group therapy
conferences. You will also be given the option of completing a
“doctoral project” in lieu of an empirical dissertation. These
projects are scholarly works that may include authoring a book,
developing a treatment protocol or researching and writing a grant
proposal for a progressive, nonprofit agency.
